Art Distilled 8/10
Who is considered an “outsider” artist?
During this evening program for adults, we will explore big questions about the visual arts polled from OM°A social media followers. Enjoy an art appreciation presentation, facilitated discussions, gallery connections, and a themed cocktail. Whether you're a connoisseur or a novice, prepare to analyze and interpret the visual arts in new ways. Bring a date or come alone and meet new friends! Beer and wine will also be available. This program will be presented by Associate Curator of Education & Outreach, David Matteson and Cocktail Specialist, Old Fashioned Dan.
Intended to encompass self-taught artists and those whose style, subject matter, or process does not cohere to the mainstream, the boundaries that distinguish “outsider” art are elusive. The term has also been problematized by critics for its potential to further ostracize visionary artists from institutional acceptance. We will connect our discussion of outsider art to exhibited works by Purvis Young.

“Isms” refers to the various styles and movements in art, often in association with the trajectory of Western modern art. Think: Impressionism, Expressionism, Dadaism, Surrealism, the list trails on. Though a well-established organizational strategy, isms may also distract from alternative interpretations of art history. We will approach this topic by first defining a selection of these isms and then tracing their legacy within works exhibited in the Florida Prize in Contemporary Art.

Tracing back to the classical ideal of Ancient Greece, the nude figure is an enduring subject explored within Western art. We will consider the evolution of this practice through a variety of historic and contemporary artworks including exhibited works by Simone Pignoni and Philip Pearlstein.
