Who is considered an “outsider” artist?

During this evening program for adults, we will explore big questions about the visual arts polled from OM°A social media followers. Enjoy an art appreciation presentation, facilitated discussions, gallery connections, and a themed cocktail. Whether you're a connoisseur or a novice, prepare to analyze and interpret the visual arts in new ways. Bring a date or come alone and meet new friends! Beer and wine will also be available. Intended to encompass self-taught artists and those whose style, subject matter, or process does not cohere to the mainstream, the boundaries that distinguish “outsider” art are elusive. The term has also been problematized by critics for its potential to further ostracize visionary artists from institutional acceptance. We will connect our discussion of outsider art to exhibited works by Purvis Young.
