Why are there so many isms?
During this evening program for adults, we will explore big questions about the visual arts polled from OM°A social media followers. Enjoy an art appreciation presentation, facilitated discussions, gallery connections, and a themed cocktail. Whether you're a connoisseur or a novice, prepare to analyze and interpret the visual arts in new ways. Bring a date or come alone and meet new friends! Beer and wine will also be available. This program will be presented by Associate Curator of Education & Outreach, David Matteson and Cocktail Specialist, Old Fashioned Dan.
“Isms” refers to the various styles and movements in art, often in association with the trajectory of Western modern art. Think: Impressionism, Expressionism, Dadaism, Surrealism, the list trails on. Though a well-established organizational strategy, isms may also distract from alternative interpretations of art history. We will approach this topic by first defining a selection of these isms and then tracing their legacy within works exhibited in the Florida Prize in Contemporary Art.
